R-Day tickets sell fast this year

Republic Day 2012 tickets are selling rapidly at different counters set up by the Ministry of Defence. According to information from the ministry, 32,000 tickets have been issued for this year.

Ticket sellers at counters said tickets are selling more quickly as compared to last year. The tickets are priced at Rs 300, Rs 150, Rs 50 and Rs 10. “I am selling between 300 to 500 tickets a day. Rs 300 and Rs 150 tickets are over,” said the man selling tickets at the Jantar Mantar counter. The sale of tickets for enclosures open to the public started on January 7 and will continue till January 25.

There are nine departmental counters located at North Block and South Block round about, Pragati Maidan metro station gate number one, Jantar Mantar main gate, Shastri Bhawan near gate number one, India Gate near Jamnagar House, Red Fort near police picket, Parliament House reception  and the tourist office at Janpath.

“The non-departmental counters are at ITDC travel counters at Ashok Hotel and Janpath Hotel, DTDC counters such as coffee home at Baba Kharak Singh Marg and Dilli Haat, and Gandhi Ashram at Chandni Chowk,” said Sanjay Arora, Officer on Special Duty for Republic Day tickets. The Beating Retreat tickets are available only for the dress rehearsal on January 28, priced at Rs 50 and Rs 10.

The final day will be attended only by special invites.

In 2011, the total earnings  from the sale of Republic Day tickets were at Rs 19.8 lakh  and Rs 2.33 lakh from Beating Retreat. An official from the Ministry of Defence said around 31,000 tickets were sold last year for Republic Day and 5,800 tickets for the Beating Retreat function.
