Congress candidate to be booked for giving away cricket kits

Panaji, Jan 23, (IANS) :

Election officials here are in the process of filing a complaint against Congress candidate and Goa Cricket Association (GCA) president Dayanand Narvekar for distributing cricket kits after the model code of conduct for elections had come into force.

Speaking to reporters in Panaji Monday, joint chief electoral officer N.S. Navti said a local official had recommended that Narvekar, a former vice president of the Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI), be booked for violation of the model code of conduct.

"The deputy collector has recommended filing of a first information report (FIR) against Narvekar. We have sent the recommendation to the commission (Election Commission of India). We are awaiting their advice," Navti said.

The election officials were probing a complaint, filed by former GCA official Shekhar Salkar, that the distribution of kits amounted to luring of cricket-loving voters.

Narvekar, currently a Congress legislator from Aldona, has courted controversy on several occasions as the GCA president. He was booked last year for forging his son’s birth certificate to enable him to play in specific age brackets for the GCA state team.
