Museum in memory of hockey great Dhyanchand on anvil in MP

Bhopal, Jan 24, 2012 (PTI)

A museum will be set up in Madhya Pradesh in memory of hockey legend Major Dhyanchand, who also deserves to get the first Bharat Ratna award in the Sports category, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said.

File photoAfter felicitating the Asian Hockey Champions, former Olympians and the National Junior and Sub-Junior women's hockey teams for their sparkling performances last night at his residence, Chouhan announced that a museum in memory of Dhyanchand will be set up in the state. Chouhan said it was Dhyanchand who had won three gold medals in Olympics for India and therefore he deserves the Bharat Ratna first than any other player.

He also urged the Centre that if it is not interested in nurturing hockey, it should handover it to Madhya Pradesh, whose people have unflinching committment for the promotion of hockey.

On the occasion, Chouhan honoured winning team and 28 former Olympians who were part of the Berlin Olympics Platinum Jubilee celebration with Rs one lakh cash award each and the National Junior and Sub-Junior Women's hockey team members with Rs 10,000 each. He also honoured the coach with a cash award of Rs 20,000 on the occasion.

Former Olympian Gurbaksh Singh said the Centre should accept the Madhya Pradesh Government's proposal to adopt hockey in the national interest. He also praised the state government for giving due honour to hockey and asked the other states to emulate the example set by Madhya Pradesh in this regard.

The Chief Minister also handed over appointment letters of government service to Vikram awardees of the state on the occasion.
