‘Accident deaths on rise’
Superintendent of Police Dr Ravi Kumar said that road accidents were a major cause of death in the developing countries.
Speaking at the 23rd National Road Safety Week organised by the district administration, Transport department and Police on Saturday, he said people died in large numbers two to three decades ago due to contagious diseases. However, now road accidents are claiming many lives. There is a need to create awareness on traffic management and road rules. Proper traffic management, awareness, and legal methods should be taken to reduce road accidents.
Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, Professor of Transfusion Medicine Dr Sudha said that there was a high rate of voluntary blood donation abroad, but in India, it was just around 40 per cent. Udupi district had a high rate of voluntary blood donation in the State.
There was no blood storage facility available from Udupi to Karwar. There is a need to start a blood storage facility at Kundapur or Baindur. One unit of blood can save four persons, she said.
