‘Chik’magalur to savour Chinese chickens
After electronic gadgets and mobile phones, now China is out to conquer Indian market with their chickens. These black chickens have already made appearance in the city and are luring the local people.
Resembling Turkey slightly, a chicken weighing 750 gms can earn about Rs 200. Thousands of such chicken have been brought to the city by vendors from Uttar Pradesh who have been selling these chicken on roadsides.
A pair of chicken is priced at Rs 350 to 400 and people are rushing to these vendors in large numbers mainly out of curiosity. Amruthlal and Barilal brothers from Allahabad in UP have been selling Chinese chickens in the city over the last two days at Marutinagar.
The black chickens with grey spots are attracting the attention of the passers by.
These chickens start laying eggs when they are four months old. They lay eggs for four months and stop for couple of months. The life span of these chickens is comparatively more than other chickens. They feed on wheat, jowar, rice and pulses. They also pick on small insects and worms.
Amruthlal says that these chickens taste like Indian chicken and though they are called Chinese chicken, they are grown in Allahabad too.
“We came from Allahabad to Hyderabad in December along with 3,000 chickens. From there we started walking along with the chicken, halting here and there, selling considerable numbers,” he said adding that business in Chikmagalur has been good mainly because people here have not been bargaining over price.
Barilal says that only 800 chickens are left for sale and he hopes to finish the stock in three to four days.
However, the local residents who are rearing indigenous chicken varieties say that if the Chinese chickens take hold here than there will be no takers for local chickens for sure.
