Play lampooning Maya banned in UP
Officials here have refused permission to allow a play in which a character reportedly resembles UP chief minister Mayawati to be staged on the grounds that it would be a violation of the model code of conduct.
The play ‘My Sandal’ reportedly portrays a princess, who dethrones her father and declares herself as the new ruler, has a fancy for footwear. She sends one of her trusted men to a foreign country to buy a pair of golden sandals. It may be recalled that WikiLeaks founder Julian Asange had claimed on the basis of a leaked cable that Mayawati had a great fancy for footwear and that she had once sent an empty plane to Mumbai just to buy a pair of sandals.
The resemblance does not end there. The princess has also owns an elephant (election symbol of Mayawati’s party), which eats the golden sandal and develops a severe stomach ache. On being given medicine, the sandal comes out the other end and several other valuables, which the princess had hidden in its stomach also tumble out.
Though the director of the play Mukesh Varma claimed that it did not show any one in bad light and only lampooned corruption.
