Court judgment in just 10 days
In what appears to be the most expeditious trial ever in Bihar, a fast-track court has convicted the accused and sent them to prison within ten days of the crime being committed.
The court awarded three years of rigorous imprisonment to the three criminals after they were pronounced guilty of robbing passengers on Banka-Deoghar road in Banka district on January 12.
The three accused—Kamdev Tanti, Abhay Singh and Sumit Shah—had intercepted some vehicles and robbed passengers. In the meantime, a police team rushed to the spot and arrested the interstate gang of three road robbers with pistols and cartridges on them.
The police submitted the chargesheet in the case on January 14, and urged the court to list the case for a speedy trial. The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) of Banka, Bharat Tiwary, transferred the case to a fast-track court headed by judicial magistrate A K Thakur. The trial concluded within six days and the accused were awarded three years of rigorous imprisonment after the court found the trio guilty.
The ‘speedy verdict’ by the fast-track court comes close on the heels of a Lakhisarai court holding an accused guilty of trying to kill a doctor. The said medical practitioner V K Mishra was posted at the primary health centre in Lakhisarai and had refused to pay extortion money to Varun, the accused. Varun was eventually sent to jail after the fast-track court found him guilty and pronounced its judgment within 135 days.
The second fastest judgment had come a few years ago in a robbery case, in 13 days, when the present Bihar DGP, Abhayanand, was posted as ADG (Headquarters).
Abhayanand has now asked all the SPs to ensure deposition of witnesses in important cases on time, and help accelerate the trail process in serious cases of crime.
