Impressed by care for cure

Manjushree G Naik, January 27 2012, DHNS:

Simon Van Laarhoven from Netherlands is excited with the idea of “care” practiced by Indian medical practitioners instead of “cure,” the concept used by the doctors in Netherlands.|

He says: “It is miracle of care that makes one to get well soon. The patients are taken care with more affection and in Netherlands, we only think in terms of how to cure certain diseases and least concern is expressed towards offering friendliness and warmth to the patients.”

Simon is two week old here in India and has studied more than what he would have been possible in this little time. He is on exchange programme from Hospital Atreum in Netherlands with Kasturba Medical hospital. He is working with department of Orthopedics.

“I have come here to take up clinical work besides working on research”.

“India is a land of peace with no chaos and disturbances. Indians are fortunate to enjoy the serenity of the atmosphere. People are friendlier with helping nature. I have come across many incidents where people rush to your help. For the first time, I have experienced such kind of hospitality,” he added.

Simon is also highly impressed by the quality of the treatment offered to the patients here and tells that it is one of the factors that India is fast growing in health sector, he says and adds Indian hospitals are good place to work as they look deep into the problem of the individual.

Curious to know more about India, Simon is planning a trip shortly especially covering southern regions.

He says “I want to travel around and see more places. I want to know how people in other states make their living and their life styles.”

He is of the opinion that the exchange programme is a venture that helps the people of both countries to know each other better. “Cooperation is necessary between two countries to promote strong ties. Netherlands and India has many things to learn from each other,” he tells.

“Indian food is baked more unlike in Netherlands where most of the times, we eat less baked food. We get nice vegetarian meals and almost all vegetarian dishes are tasty. I prefer vegetarian items and there are many number of mouth watering delicious food here,” concludes Simon.
