Lawyers end strike
The 16-day-long strike by lawyers in Jaipur was called off on Friday.
An agreement has been reached between lawyers’ associations and the government. It was mediated by the Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court.
The lawyers had been on strike since January 11 after a lawyer, Murlidhar Yadav, committed suicide at a lower court in Jaipur.
Police claimed that Yadav killed himself by jumping into a well, but lawyers alleged that police harassment over a property dispute led to the suicide.
The CBI is investigating the case. The lawyers went on strike demanding a compensation of Rs 50 lakh and a job for Yadav’s wife.
According to High Court Bar Association president Karan Singh, the government has agreed to give Rs 5 lakh and a government job to Yadav’s wife. The government will also withdraw cases filed against the lawyers during the strike.
