AIIMS docs examine Odisha rape victim

BHUBANESWAR, Jan 28, 2012, DHNS

An expert team of doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, visited Sriram Chandra Bhanja(SCB) Medical College and Hospital at  Cuttack on Saturday to conduct tests and examinations on the victim of  an alleged gang rape case at Pipli in Puri district.

The Dalit girl belonging to a poor family has been struggling for her life in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the government-run hospital. She’s in a comatose state. The team from Delhi has come on the request of the crime branch of the Odisha police which is probing the sensational incident. A police officer has been sacked and a senior minister of Naveen Patnaik cabinet has already resigned in connection with the incident.

“The medical team from the AIIMS headed by a forensic expert which examined the patient on Saturday advised further investigations. They’ll be submitting their report to the crime branch”, the emergency officer of SCB medical college and hospital, B Maharana said.

The crime branch is likely to submit its charge sheet against four arrested accused on the basis of the report of AIIMS team. The case is being monitored by the Odisha High Court.
Maharana said, the condition of the victim continues to be the same. “The fever has now come down,” he said.

Referring to the music therapy that was being applied on the patient to bring her back from coma, Maharana said that it’s still continuing. “We are continuing with the music therapy. However, instead of devotional songs, we’re now playing Indian classical music to stimulate her brain as per the advice of the experts”, he said.
