Youth kills self over ‘police harassment’
A 23-year-old man committed suicide at his house in Ambedkar Nagar over alleged police harassment.
He was allegedly detained and later released by police over a snatching case.
Ramesh Chand Gupta, who lived in Dakshinpuri, killed himself at 2.30 pm on Saturday. “He was taken to AIIMS, where doctors declared him brought dead,” a senior police officer said.
Ramesh’s family have blamed the police for his death, saying the police repeatedly harassed Ramesh whenever any cellphone snatching incident was reported in the area.
“Ramesh was recently detained and released after questioning over a snatching case. He was upset over this,” a family member said.
Police denied the allegations. A senior official said he was a “drug addict” and was under the influence of stimulants on the day of the incident.
“We are investigating the matter. A case has been filed with Ambedkar Nagar police station,” the official added.
In a separate incident in the area, a teenager attempted suicide by hanging himself over an argument with his mother on Saturday.
“Rajesh, 19, a resident of Subhash Camp, was upset after his mother refused to give him money to buy alcohol. He was rescued by his family members. He has been admitted to Max Hospital,” the officer said.
