Techie held after wife ends life

Bangalore, Jan 29, 2012, DHNS:

The wife of a software engineer was found hanging from the ceiling fan at her house in BTM Layout here Saturday evening.

Her husband, Rangaraju Subhashchandra (29), was arrested on Sunday evening on charges of torturing her and driving her to suicide.

Kalpana (26) the victim, an MCA graduate, was married to Subhashchandra for two years and had a 13-month daughter, Anvitha. Her parents have alleged that constant mental and physical torture by her in-laws drove her to take the extreme step.

Kalpana apparently committed suicide soon after Rangaraju left the house around 5:30 pm. Anvitha was at home when her mother hung herself. The suicide came to light when Rangaraju returned home. Police say no death note was found.

The victim had an argument with her in-laws about purchasing a bag on Friday. Upset and aggrieved, she left home, apparently to travel to Hyderabad where her parents live. She, however, reached Lalbagh and stayed put there for sometime.

Rangaraju brought her back home on Saturday afternoon. Upon her return, Kalpana was again allegedly chided by her mother-in-law Nalini. Dejected and depressed, Kalpana locked herself in a room and ended her life, the Madivala Sub-division ACP, said.

The victim’s parents, refused to buy the suicide theory, and alleged that her parents-in-law, Lakshman Murthy and Nalini, as well as brother-in-law Maheshchandra, constantly tortured her. They claimed that the couple had several differences.

They had given dowry at the time of wedding. But Rangaraju and his family kept demanding for more. He used to subject Kalpana to constant physical and mental torture. Hence, he might have murdered her and cooked up the suicide theory, they alleged.

Later in the day Kalpana’s father lodged a complaint. Consequently, a case under Section 304 (B) (dowry death) and 498 (A) (dowry harassment) of the IPC was registered and Rangaraju was arrested. He will be produced before the jurisdictional magistrate on Monday. The post-mortem was conducted at the St John’s Hospital.
