At last, exclusive cycling track to be reality soon

Bangalore, Jan 29, 2012, DHNS:

An exclusive cycling track will soon be a reality at the HSR Layout, with the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) seeking the consulting agencies on January 13 to submit a detailed project report for non-motorised track (NMT).

The overwhelming response from people helped the organisers make a profit this year. DH PhotoThe DULT has ensured that the government bodies conducted the preliminary studies before floating the tenders.

“Spread across 1,500 acres, HSR Layout lies between Hosur Road and Sarjapur Road. HSR Layout is about seven km from Bangalore's other large residential area of Jayanagar, and two km from Koramangala,” as per the Request for Proposal.

The cycle track roughly 14 km in length will be placed in such a way that it can connect to Koramangala and Madiwala where  the DULT plans to start the non-motorised track.

Nawaz, a member of the DULT, said: “After preliminary studies, we found great many cyclists at HSR Layout. Also, it is closer to software companies and IT Park.”

The NMT project will have to not only lay cycle tracks, but also construct bridges, drains, footpaths, signages and track maps.

The entire project, estimated to cost Rs seven crore, will be funded by both the DULT and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.

Work on the project taken up on the pilot basis at Jayanagar is in different stages of progress.

A network

The DULT plans to create a nework to facilitate cyclists to ride across the City, once the NMT at HSR Layout and the proposed track at central buisiness district around MG Road are ready.

The select agencies are expected to conduct the study and submit final DPR to the DULT before May 2012.
