The weekend was a real treat for Bangaloreans with actors from all the five film industries playing on one ground.
At the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday, there was lot of tamasha happening on the ground, off it and around the stadium as well. If the match between ‘Bengal Tigers’ and ‘Telugu Warriors’ was a smooth sail, the match between ‘Mumbai Heroes’ and ‘Karnataka Bulldozers’ really tested the nerves of the City police.
There were friends of the players and their friends and so on trying to forcefully gain an entry into the stadium for the match between ‘Mumbai Heroes’ and ‘Karnataka Bulldozers’.
If ‘Telugu Warriors’ had most of their young actresses, like Parul, descend on the stadium to support the team, ‘Karnataka Bulldozers’ had more than half of the Kannada film industry on ground. Looks like the Bangalore ground has been lucky for the ‘Telugu Warriors’ in taking them to the top rung.
They played exceptionally well and have won both their matches in the City. Even captain Venkatesh played his best and boosted the morale of the boys. “There were a few matches that I didn’t play, I wanted the younger boys to get out there and have some fun. But I love cricket and couldn’t resist the temptation of getting on to the field,” said Venkatesh.
It was the evening match that had the stadium filled to capacity. The screams of the crowd grew louder as the evening progressed. Pradeep of the ‘Karnataka Bulldozers’ played exceptionally well pushing the team to a decent score. For ‘Mumbai Heroes’, Varun Badola held fort and after his exit, wickets began to fall one after another. It was a nail-biting match but lady luck smiled on ‘Karnataka Bulldozers’ turning its fortunes around.
After all the controversy, Aindrita Ray made a sudden appearance in a specially designed jersey. “I wanted to put an end to all the nonsensical comments about me missing from CCL. I was asked to make only limited appearances but things seemed to have been misinterpreted. I am here to clear the air,” said Aindrita. Actress Madhuri Bhattacharya danced to a peppy song during the short break but few seemed to really watch her perform.
The ‘Mumbai Heroes’ was rather quiet with Sohail looking as nervous as he has been during any match. Suniel Shetty, an avid cricketer who is recovering from an injury, popped in some pain killers to make sure he was there to support his team. But he moved around and met Ambareesh, Rockline Venkatesh, Sudeep and Darshan. “I love the sport and have been playing since my school days but an injury has deterred me from playing here. Cricket and cinema is surely a heady mix. It’s great to see actors from all the film industries come together,” said Suniel.
Ordinary people came armed with film posters of their favourite stars, got their faces painted and didn’t forget to wear colourful headgear and wave the flag high in addition to hooting and cheering. Dipti Govind, an IT professional, was thrilled to see Suniel Shetty.
“I am a big fan and I really wanted to get a closer view of Suniel Shetty. I bunked my work to cheer for the ‘Mumbai Heroes’. This form of cricketing gets you closer to the stars,” she said.
Sudhindra Kumar, a final year student of Jain College, had bought a ticket in black. “We weren’t getting tickets and I really wanted to see the stars perform live. More than cricket, it’s like a performance. It’s hard to take them seriously,” he summed up.
