Review on railway safety

New Delhi, Jan31, 2012, DHNS:

The Railways are working on a massive automation in safety sector to free it from human errors, so that rail accidents could be curbed in a significant way.

A high-level safety review committee headed by nuclear scientist Anil Kakodar is in the process of finalising its report and likely to submit it within a fortnight. The committee, that was constituted in September 2011, has had more than 20 meetings so far. It also met on January 30 and 31 to fine tune its recommendations. The other members on the committee are N Vedachalam of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram; Sanjay Dhande, Director IIT Kanpur and G P Srivastava, Director E&I Group, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.

It is looking into all the safety-related aspects, including signalling systems, rolling stock,  and human resource development. It is also examining the need for a third party audit of safety.
