Best Bakery convict gets bail in High Court

Mumbai, Feb 2, 2012, DHNS

The Bombay High Court on Thursday granted bail to a convict in the 2002 Best Bakery case of Gujarat on grounds of his being HIV positive.

The court while granting bail asked the HIV-positive petitioner (name withheld) to furnish a personal bond of Rs 5,000. The petitioner is the first person to be granted bail in the case wherein 14 persons were killed inside the premises of Best Bakery in Vadodara during the post-Godhra communal riots of Gujarat. Justices V M Kanade and P D Kode after going through the civil hospital’s medical report indicating petitioner’s medical condition as “Stage 2,” of HIV wherein “constant medical attention is a must,” stated that “it will be appropriate to release him on bail”.

The petitioner has been asked to provide permanent address, contact number as well as instruct his relatives that they report his condition to the nearest police station every two weeks.
