City’s first community radio ‘Jana Dhwani’
In a first of its kind set up, Viveka School of Excellence in Sargur in H D Kote taluk in the district has launched ‘Jana Dhwani’ a community radio station (CRS).
The school is a unit of Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM) and has named the station after ‘voice of people’ (Jana Dhwani in Kannada), said a release from chief executive officer M A Balasubramanya.
It is expected to start functioning in the third week of February.
The station can be tuned at 90.8 MHz and will cover 40 villages in and around Sargur and H D Kote town in the radius of 10 km.
The studio and transmitter has been set up in the VSOE premises with in-kind assistance as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility by Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL), a Government of India enterprise.
The station is established to catalyze contextually relevant socio-economic development of rural-tribal communities by collating and sharing traditional and current talent and knowledge. Listeners of Jana Dhwani will be equipped with information about opportunities and processes related to local development including government schemes that they can access or entitled to. With Community engagement in program planning, creation, dissemination and management the radio would be truly reflective of the community ownership and action.
Initially it will be on air for 30 minutes in a day. News related to community needs and relevance will be transmitted in the formats of interviews, songs, soap-opera, panel discussion, short messages, public quiz etc. The focus will be on topics related to governance, health, agriculture, water, sanitation, hygiene, education, school, college and vocational education, women’s empowerment, tribal development and role of youth in community development.
