Men kill pregnant sister over ‘honour’
Rubina had married against the wishes of her family
Twenty six-year-old Rubina who had eloped with here lover returned home after seven years, thinking her angry family members would have forgiven her by now. She was wrong. On Wednesday evening, her two brothers allegedly battered her to death.
Rubina was pregnant and her unborn child too died with her in the `honour killing' that took place at Para locality on the outskirts of the state capital.
According to police sources, Rubina had married Salim, who lived in the same locality, after a brief affair. Rubina's family didn't approve of their marriage and fearing retaliation, the two eloped. They remained untraceable for seven years. Rubina , meanwhile, had become mother of a three year girl.
Thinking that her family members would have forgiven her and their anger subsided by now, Rubina and her husband came back home six months ago and bought a small house in Para locality. Rubina's parents and her brothers also lived in the neighborhood though they never visited her or spoke to her.
“It seems the brothers were still burning to take revenge'' a police official said.
On Wednesday afternoon, brothers Alauddin and Nizamuddin had an heated exchange with Rubina. The duo allegedly barged into her house later in the day and hit her repeatedly with bricks and iron rods on the head and face. By the time, the neighbors rushed to rescue her, she had sustained severe head injuries. She was rushed to the medical college hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries a little later.
The two culprits have been absconding, officials said.
Killings for the sake of family honour is quite common in the state especially in Jat- dominated western Uttar Pradesh. The powerful caste panchayats have declared that they will not allow love marriages and marriages in the same `gotra'.
