E-waste, a serious problem: Kalam

Bangalore, Aug 30, DH News Service:

Former president A P J Abdul Kalam on Saturday said the International Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) had a great scope to reach out to students, teaching faculties in universities, research institutes and 1,600 odd engineering colleges in the country.

Addressing a conference of IEEE to commemorate the 125th year of its establishment, Dr Kalam said IEEE can serve in energy production, health care, sustained development, protecting earth, communication and information system.

As many components of computers are non bio-degradable, the former president felt that the e-waste is a serious problem. He stressed upon the need for upgradation in technology to develop eco-friendly materials in computer.

He informed the audience that soon a firm is coming up which will dispose off the computer and electronic products waste.

Pinning hopes on nano technology to achieve larger goals, Dr Kalam said that nano technology had reduced the spacing between lines in computer chips, which had paved the way for miniature computers. He was also optimistic about the outcome of the convergence of nano technology, bio-technology and information technology
