Congress mum on Vadra’s hints of joining politics

New Delhi, Feb 6, 2012, DHNS:

The Congress party maintained silence on the issue of Priyanka Gandhi’s husband Robert Vadra hinting that he may join politics.

“I have not seen the reports, so, I can not respond,” was the reply of Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi when asked to comment on the remarks made by Vadra while campaigning in Amethi.

Vadra, who is latest to join the campaign trail from the Gandhi family in Amethi said, “I would definitely contest if the people so desired” when asked whether he would join politics during an informal chat with reporters.

Even the senior most leaders of the 125–year–old party have preferred not to speak, as the issue is sensitive, since the statement came from the member of the top family of the party.

“No comments on the issue,” was the repeated reply of another senior leader of the party to a volley of questions on the issue. At last, when asked whether Vadra contesting elections would benefit the party, the leader got bit annoyed and said, “Better you ask Mr Vadra.”

Vadra reached Amethi on Sunday night along with his daughter. Early on Monday, he took part in the rally in Gauriganj area and addressed the electorate in the Salon Assembly segments of Amethi, a Gandhi family pocket borough.

Earlier, in 2010, Vadra, 42 a businessman by profession had said that he can win elections from anywhere if he contests.

“I can definitely win (an election) from anywhere but I am a businessman. Why politics? I should be known for what I am,” Vadra had said in an interview given to an English daily.
He also revealed that there had been great pressure on him to contests 2009 Lok Sabha elections, but he refused.

“There is a time and place for everything. If I feel that I know enough about this line (politics), if I can dedicate enough time and effort to it, when my children are grown up and if I can make a difference, then why not?” he said.
