Campaigning for first phase of UP poll ends
Monday being the last day of campaigning for the ensuing Assembly poll in UP, leaders of major political parties went on a campaign spree to mobilise the electorate in their favour.
BJP leaders Rajnath Singh and Uma Bharti addressed election rallies at Siddharth Nagar and Barabanki districts respectively on Monday while Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav and leader of the opposition Shivpal Singh Yadav sought votes in Sitapur and Gonda districts.
Congress leaders, including Union Minister Beni Prasad Verma, cricketer-turned-politician Mohammad Azharuddin and Digvijay Singh, addressed a series of meetings at Baharaich, Gonda and Basti districts on the last day of campaigning.
The seats to be contested in the first phase are crucial for all the major stake holders, particularly the BSP and the SP, who had performed well here last time.
Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi and Chief Minister Mayawati also addressed rallies at many places.
