PCB imposes media gag on players after Ajmal controversy
Stung by the controversy created by Saeed Ajmal's recent interview, the Pakistan Cricket Board has imposed a media gag on the players making it mandatory for them to make statements only in the presence of the team manager.
PCB chairman, Zaka Ashraf said that in future a key official of the team management will be present with the players during any interview session.
He said that the PCB had reviewed the entire situation arising out of Ajmal's interview that led to a controversy over his bowling action.
"We have looked at this episode and have issued instructions to the team management to ensure such things are not repeated," he told the 'Dawn' newspaper today.
Ajmal himself ignited the controversy over his bowling action in an interview to BBC in which he claimed that the ICC had given him special permission to straighten his arm beyond the allowed 15 degrees.
Sources in the Board also disclosed that the PCB chief was not happy with the laxity shown by the team management in allowing players to give independent interviews without clearance from the manager or coach.
"The PCB reminded the manager, Naved Cheema that all players are under the Board's code of conduct and are required to inform and seek permission before giving any interview or statement to any media outlet," one source said.
The PCB, in its new code of conduct, has provisions for heavy fines and even bans for players who violate the media policy outlined for them.
Ashraf also clarified that former captain Shoaib Malik was included in the ODIO squad on the request of skipper Misbah-ul-Haq.
