BMTC fares increase due to NH-7 toll

Bangalore, Feb 9, 2012, DHNS:

The controversial decision to collect toll on Bengaluru International Airport Road will also affect commuters travelling on Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses.

All buses travelling through the toll booth will charge the revised fare. Starting Friday, BMTC plans to increase bus ticket fares by Re one on every ordinary service. While, Vayu Vajras or the Volvos travelling to and fro BIA will increase fare by Rs 5.

Passengers holding a BMTC bus pass (monthly or daily) will also have to shell out the additional charge.  However, BMTC has spared students, the disabled and freedom fighters from shelling out extra bucks.

BMTC claims the move to collect toll on the NH-7 routes will burden the corporation by Rs 30,000 per day.  The revised fares are only meant to offset the losses that BMTC will incur, a press release from the corporation said.

A senior official from BMTC told Deccan Herald: “The move to increase fares comes too soon from the corporation’s management. However, while public may feel the pinch, the BMTC needs to ensure that it continues to make profits.”
