CMC lags in water tax collection
The urban local body has appealed the public to pay tax promptly
Madikeri CMC has achieved success in collecting the property tax during 2010-11. However, it lags behind in water tax collection.
The CMC achieved 74 per cent success in collecting property tax from commercial complexes and residences. However, the water tax collection is only 30 per cent. In the meantime, the CMC is confident of reaching the target in tax collection in the next one and half months. The CMC has appealed the public to pay the tax promptly.
Concession
The CMC Commissioner Shashikumar said that those who pay the tax for 2011-12 in the month of April will get 5 per cent concession in the tax amount. No penalty will be levied on those who pay the tax in the month of May-June. Those who pay tax after July will be levied two per cent penalty. Hence, the public should pay the tax on time, he said.
“The CMC supplies 45 lakh litre water daily to its citizens. The annual expenditure for supplying water is Rs one crore. However, very few consumers pay water bill promptly,” said sources.
Madikeri CMC President H M Nandakumar said “we supply water through tankers during summer.
The consumers should cooperate with the CMC. Though the Government has directed us to increase water tariff to Rs 120, the CMC has increased it to Rs 90.”
Property tax
Madikeri has a population of Rs 36,000. There are 7,780 houses in CMC limits. The Self Assessment Scheme for paying the property tax is in force in the City. Accordingly, the public pay the tax by assising their property. “No tax is levied on empty sites in Madikeri. No concession is given to the commercial complexes. Those who have not registered their property should get the property registered with the CMC at the earliest,” said Commissioner.
