Sonia, Priyanka jointly seek votes in UP
AICC president Sonia Gandhi and her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday hit the campaign trail together on the family turf of Raebareli and jointly addressed an election rally in which they held the Mayawati regime responsible for the backwardness of Uttar Pradesh accusing it of meting out step–motherly treatment to Raebareli and Amethi.
In an apparent bid to deflect the criticism for the lack of development in the family pocket borough, Ms Gandhi sought to shift the blame onto the successive state governments.
She said that the Centre had provided Rs 1 lakh crore to the UP government during the past five years for different schemes but the state still lagged behind in every field.
Ms Gandhi charged the Mayawati government with creating obstacles in the way of the development of Raebareli. “The district authorities did not give permission for holding an Army recruitment rally...it would have provided employment to the youth of the area,” she said.
She said the Centre had to approach the courts to get the state government to grant the necessary clearances for the rail coach factory at Lalganj.
The Congress chief lambasted the BSP, SP and BJP for not taking any interest in the development of the state and indulging in the politics of caste and religion. “The Congress believes in service and development,” she said exhorting the people to support the Congress.
