Dogs raid pen, kill 40 high-breed sheep

Chintamani, February 16 2012, DHNS:

A pack of street dogs raided a sheep pen and killed 40 Australian high-breed sheep in Agrahara of the town on Wenesday midnight.

The canines indiscriminately attacked the sheep killing them instantly. The pen belonged to Shankarappa, who had purchased the sheep with a bank loan. 

A veterinary doctor from the Animal Husbandary Department visited the spot and treated the injured sheep. It is estimated that the losses due to the death could be up to Rs 3 lakh. A case has been registered with the local police.

The Town Municipal Council has clarified that it has taken steps to control the stray dog menace. Animal activists have filed cases against the employees of TMC.

TMC has also started the animal birth control programme.
