The IT giant, which had earlier offered the students a package of Rs 2.9 lakh per annum during the campus placements in 2007, has, in the revised offer, scaled it down to Rs 60,000 and set a deadline for responding to it.  “On August 28 last, the company through an e-mail, informed all recruits that it would not be possible for them to hire us as technical associates.  But if we are keen to join their BPO division, we can do so at a consolidated monthly salary of Rs 5,000 and the deadline set for our response was August 31 (Monday),” one of the students told Deccan Herald here. The students passed out in 2008 and were eagerly awaiting their joining date when this communique crashed their dreams.

More than 80 students-turned-recruits had gathered in front of the Tech Mahindra office at Sector V, Salt Lake, near here and demonstrated there demanding a clarification. Nearly 2,000 students who passed out last year and early this year from various private engineering colleges of Bengal, were to join the company, but very few had actually joined in the wake of the latest developments. Meanwhile, some of the students who had already completed their training session with the company a year back, were reportedly sent on compulsory unpaid leave for six months and their leave was extended for six months. “And now, they’ve been asked to join in the BPO,” the student said.
