Music with a difference
NEW BUBBLES
They refuse to be bracketed under any genre of music and jokingly claim that their band name is not even a dictionary word.
But there is a lot to say about their music. The five-member band Plok recently played at Turquoise Cottage and sent the patrons in a frenzy.
The band members are Neeraj Aggarwala (vocals), Anirudh Subramaniam and Tushar Rawal (guitars), Jayant Manchanda (bass) and Nirvan Pareva (drums). The band claims to seek its influences from Alterbridge, A Perfect Circle, Incubus, Dream Theater, Blackfield, Live, Metallica, Mika, Godsmack, Opeth, Smashing Pumpkins, Porcupine Tree, U2, Oasis, SOD, Mr Big, Queen, The Beatles and DMB.
Says Neeraj, “While looking for a name, we really wanted something that would represent our music. Last year, Anirudh, Rahul and I picked up a guitar and started strumming some pop music. Before we even realised, we had an interesting song in place. That night saw the birth of our song In a Sense and Plok too.”
From there the trio moved on to recruiting the brightest musical talent in the City to create the freshest sound that makes Plok what it is today.
Owner of Turquoise Cottage Gaurav Soral says, “My idea of coming up with this place was to promote Indian music bands, when I was young and wanted to play music in front of live audience.
I never got a stage or space to perform this way so we came up with this place in 1997. It has been amazing journey so far and the concept of bringing many bands to perform under one roof, makes me feel really proud.”
The band strictly believes in not stereotyping their music. “Just because something isn’t appreciated, or is appreciated a little too much doesn’t mean that we’re going to stop experimenting,” says Anirudh. He adds, “We like it... we do it. This also means that we’re open to trying newer things.
Moving along the same thought, we also do not like to confine ourselves to a particular genre. Fine, our sound might appeal to people who listen to alt or rock, and we’re happy that it does, but we just cannot generalise our music. So we wanted to break this ‘bubble’ and that’s the sound of Plok.”
Music lover and college student Anisha Pant says, “I have been listening to them for a while and it’s an amazing experience to see them perform live. The band is just one-year-old but they play like true professionals. Anirudh on guitar is the soul of this band.
