DUTA, DU students’ unions join hands to highlight grievances

New Delhi, Feb 21, 2012, DHNS:

In order to address various teacher and students related issues, Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) joined hands with the varisty's students’ unions on Tuesday to start a joint campaign.

Members from students’ union of colleges and DU's student union (DUSU) held a meet where the students raised several concerns related to sports and extra curricular activities apart from the discrepancies in the semester system.

“Students’ union of colleges like Lady Shri Ram (LSR), Kamla Nehru, St Stephens, Dyal Singh and Deshbandhu put forth grievance of students and talked about the vice-chancellor’s refusal to address them,” said Amar Deo Sharma, president DUTA.

Research scholars who used to have a union, Delhi University Researchers Association (DURA), which is defunct since the last seven years, also joined the cause.

“Sportspersons in colleges are not allowed to use the renovated facilities and are being asked to pay a fee to use the sports complex. The DU authorities are making it difficult for students to participate in festivals and all India competitions,” said Sharma.

He added, “The practice of not allowing any leverage in attendance and internal assessment has been followed so far.”

According to Sharma, the students also complained about the syllabus taking a toll on them since the inception of the semester system.

It is being taught in a hurried manner which is affecting the learning process of the students.

DUTA will hold a peaceful protest at University Grants Commission (UGC) on February 24 in which the students’ union members will also take part. It recently held four-day college wise protests to make students aware of the various University issues.
