Use of gomala land for wind power units opposed

Last Updated 27 February 2012, 18:16 IST

The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and the district unit of the Hasiru Sene have demanded that the State government should withdraw the order sanctioning gomala (cattle grazing) land to private companies for the purpose of setting up wind power stations in Ranebennur and Hirekerur taluks of the district.

While on the one hand, the government provides financial help to dairy farmers to buy cows and buffaloes, on the other hand it is snatching away land meant to graze these animals, said farmers’ leader Ravindragowda Patil.

Addressing a press conference, he said the government had decided to give 88 acres of gomala land in the two taluks, to Bangalore-based company Abletech Electro-engineers Private Limited on lease for 30 years. Patil said the government’s move will push hundreds of families to the streets. He demanded that the government should withdraw the order granting land, failing which they would hold a massive agitation in the city on March 5.

The district administration, which does not allow provision of housing for the poor on gomala land, has readily sanctioned the same land for the private companies.

Patil said the district administration had given a false report regarding the number of cattle in the district.

He said the district administration had mentioned that there were lesser number of cattle than the previous census, even though there was actually an increase in their numbers.
