Duo steals Rs 16 lakh from company to buy from online shopping sites

Two foreigners were arrested for hacking the bank account of a company and stealing Rs 16 lakh, police said on Monday.

Evans Ukah Mendi, 34, from Cameroon and William Tambo, 37, from South Africa, were held in Safdarjung Enclave on Sunday, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime) Ashok Chand. While Mendi stayed at Humayunpur village in Safdarjung Enclave, Tambo stayed at a rented house in Mehrauli.

The company owner had filed a complaint with the police on February 29. His company at Civil Lines in north Delhi, which makes biscuits, operated a current account in Punjab National Bank. On February 22, he found that Rs 16 lakh had been transferred from his account through internet banking.

“We found that the fraudsters had hacked the password of the company’s account to buy goods online, and transferred Rs 2,32,682 to Futurebazar, Rs 6,37,141 to Fashionandyou and Rs 7,11,290 to TV 18,” said Chand.

Futurebazar and TV 18 were suspicious over transaction of such a large amount of money, and they stopped delivery of the consignment.

Fashionandyou.com delivered two consignments and another was due to be delivered on March 2 to Arjun Nagar in Safdarjung Enclave, for which the duo had given a contact number.

“We made a dummy parcel and gave it to the delivery man of Fashionandyou to hand it over to the two foreigners. Since the address was fake, the delivery man called them. He was asked to come to another house in the same area,” said Chand.

The two fraudsters were arrested while taking delivery of the parcel. They told police that they had hacked the password of the company’s bank account. Then they bought goods worth lakhs of rupees from the online shopping websites.

“The address for consignment delivery was fake but they gave a valid cellphone number,” said Chand. They were staying in India illegally.

Mendi came to India in 2008 on a student visa and did a diploma in computers in Mumbai. William has been living in India for the last two years. He came to India illegally via Nepal. Then he got a fake South African passport and a fake Indian visa.
