A 35-year-old man has been arrested  for allegedly killing his former wife, after a meeting to mark the anniversary of their failed marriage last year.

Deepak Gupta, a resident of Ashok Nagar in south east Delhi, and a friend Sunil Kumar have been arrested for murdering the woman and dumping her body in Baghpat district in Uttar Pradesh, police said on Tuesday.

Deepak had decided to eliminate his ex-wife after their divorce in May 2011, said Ashok Chand, deputy commissioner of police (crime and railways).

“Initially their marital life was peaceful, but after a few years Deepak started abusing and physically assaulting his wife. The constant quarrels finally led to their divorce last year. The woman had later started living with Deepak’s relatives in Vijay Vihar,” Chand added.

Furious with his wife’s decision, Deepak roped in his friend Sunil Kumar, a resident of Baghpat, to help him kill her.

On November 29, 2011, their marriage anniversary, he suggested a meeting at Japanese Park in Rohini to mark the day.

When she arrived, Deepak and Sunil took her to a Jain temple in Baghpat.

“On the way back from the temple, Deepak stopped the car at an isolated stretch. Sunil held her, while Deepak strangled her with a belt. Then they dumped the body in a nearby sugarcane field and returned to Delhi,” Chand added.

They also battered her face with a heavy stone, disfiguring her to prevent her identification.

A case was registered at Chandi Nagar police station in Uttar Pradesh after the body was recovered.
Deepak and Sunil had been absconding since the murder. They were held by Delhi Police after a tip-off that they would come near Meet Nagar flyover in Ashok Nagar.

A trap was laid and Deepak and Sunil were apprehended. The mobile phone and a SIM card have been seized.

Delhi Police have informed their UP counterparts about the arrests.
