Last Updated 27 March 2012, 17:24 IST

The seven-day forest fire has not only damaged vegetation in the Shirady reserve forest, but also damaged the beauty of the Forest. What remains is only ashes, blackish trees and half burnt bamboo bushes.

The flames, which have been erupting in isolated spots of the forest, have been contained on Tuesday with the untired efforts of the forest officials.

The fire was first noticed at Mugilubetta in Sakleshpura forest range of Hassan on March 20.

Though the officials had doused fire on March 21, the fire once again erupted on Thursday and it remained uncontrollable till Sunday. About 80 acre forest has been damaged in the fire along with priceless flora and fauna.

On Monday, the fire had reached on the periphery of Gundya highway. Few bamboo bushes and trees have been damaged in the fire in the region. The forest officials with the help of the locals were successful in containing the fire by Monday afternoon.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, forest officials who were inside the forest keeping a watch of the fire, said the forest fire has been brought under control. “However, we can not keep quiet. We have to be vigilant and keep an eye on the forest. Increase in heat and lack of moisture content cause forest fire. Without rain water, it is not easy to contain forest fire.”

Shiradi Reserve Forest is known for its valuable trees. It is also treasuretrove of medicinal plants. “The officials and the locals will have to douse the fire if forest fire erupts again.

Without connecting road, the fire service personnel too can not reach the spot,” said officials.
