Residents' wait for road repair continues

Last Updated 04 April 2012, 17:57 IST

Residents of Kaprigudda and Bishop Victor road are now used to roads with potholes and chipped edges for officials and elected representatives have turned deaf ear to the persistent plea of the residents of the region for good roads.

In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner Dr N S Channappa Gowda and Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner Dr Harish, the residents alleged that the two roads have been neglected for quite a long time.

“After the last monsoon, the roads have not only become unfit for traffic but even pedestrians, particularly senior citizens and children find it difficult to walk on these roads.

Autorikshaw drivers are refusing to ply on these roads, thus causing lot of inconvenience to the public.

The roads were damaged owing to the plying of heavy vehicles carrying steel, stones, cement and other construction materials for the construction of an indoor stadium.

Further the condition of the road has gone from bad to worse after the city buses were diverted to these roads when the Nandigudda road concrete work was started. The drains constructed recently on Kaprigudda road have also been damaged,” they said.

A resident Dionysius said “Kaprigudda road was asphalted recently from S L Mathias Road up to KMC Indoor stadium. However, the rest of the road has been left as it is. In fact, the newly asphalted stretch was repaired last year as well.

The road from KMC indoor stadium to the B V Road Junction has not been asphalted for the last 15 years. It is difficult to understand, why two third of the road has been developed and the rest is retained as it is,” he said.

On the other hand, the Bishop Victor road was asphalted last year, just before the onset of the monsoon. However, due to the poor quality of work, the road is dotted with potholes all over and is not motorable.

“We have submitted several memorandums to Deputy Commissioner and MCC commissioner, to initiate measure to repair the roads at the earliest, as only few days are left for the monsoon to hit the coastal districts.

If the roads are not repaired now, it would become difficult for the residents to use the road during monsoon,” the residents said in a memorandum.
