<p>A 29-year-old postgraduate student from West Bengal, who was in the City for an industrial training programme, was run over by a train near Marathalli on Tuesday morning. <br /><br /></p>.<p>Mahananda Ghosh, daughter of Manoj Kumar Ghosh of Howrah in West Bengal, was interning at a hotel in Marathalli, said the Baiyyapanahalli Railway police.<br /><br />Mahananda, studying Hotel Management at Brilliant Institute of Hospitality Management at Howrah, had come to Bangalore 15 days ago, and was staying at a flat at Doddanekundi.<br /><br />The police said a few persons noticed Mahananda talking over cellphone around 10:30 am while crossing the track near New Marathalli Ring Road bridge.<br /><br />She allegedly failed to notice the train coming from Baiyapanahalli station and heading towards CRML station. Such was the impact of the accident that her severed head was found several metres away and parts of her body were found strewn all over, said locality residents. <br /><br />A few persons, claiming to be eyewitnesses, said she was walking along the track, listening to music on her earphones. The police, however, said they did not find earphones at the spot.<br /><br />The hotel representative told Deccan Herald she had joined the hotel just 15 days ago and said he did not know much about her. <br /><br />29 killed<br /><br />The number of accidents on the track at Baiyapanahalli is on the rise. Over the past few months, as many as 29 pedestrians were run over by trains while crossing the tracks, said a Baiyyapanahalli railway policeman. <br /><br />In most of the cases, the victims were listening to music on earphones while crossing the tracks.In February, BCA student Pushpak Nagraj was mowed down by a speeding train near Kengeri. He didn’t hear the honking of the speeding train and warning by onlookers.<br /><br />In another incident last year, a 36-year-old Bengali woman, Anitha Smith, was allegedly talking on the cellphone while crossing the track near Marathalli Bridge, when a speeding train hit her. <br /><br /></p>
