An 80-year-old widow was beaten to death in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district. According to police, the incident happened a few days ago at Tatair Buzurg village in the district.

Though she was too old to walk properly, she was accused of practicing witchcraft, police said.

A 16-year-old girl who lived near Kamarunnisha’s house told her parents that the old woman was practicing witchcraft.

The girl, Batasa, also told her parents that she had been a victim of black magic at the hands of the woman.

Then Batasa fell ill for some time and had been allegedly behaving abnormally for the last few days.

Her parents suspected the widow had done something to their daughter.

Batasa’s brother Nawab went to Kamarunnisha’s house at night and thrashed her, police said.

The octogenarian woman could not bear the beating and became unconscious.

She was taken to a primary health centre but was referred to a medical college in Gorakhpur. She was declared brought dead.

Villagers tried their best to convince Parvez, the widow’s only nephew, not to approach police.

However, he went ahead and a filed a case.

Nawab is absconding and a search is on.

“The old woman was bed-ridden. She never came out of her house,” Parvez said.

Incidents of branding old women as witches and killing them have been reported from parts of the state, especially in eastern districts of Soenbhadra, Mirzapur and Jaunpur.
