A 40-year-old woman committed suicide by pouring kerosene and then setting herself on fire at her residence in Khajoori Khas in north east Delhi on Sunday after her husband coerced her into flesh trade, police said.

Shahzadi, 40, was in a strained relationship with her second husband, Sehdulla, 42.
“In her dying statement, Shahzadi said that her husband, a daily wage earner forced her into prostitution.  When she could not bear, it she committed suicide,” said a police officer.

Shahzadi left her first husband, Rahish, 40, around 12 years ago and married Sehdulla. With Sehdulla she had three sons, Aman, 9, Sayil, 6, and Hrithik, 5. They were staying at a rented house at Khajoori Khas. Both are from West Bengal.

“She had complained of strained relations with her husband. They often quarrelled and on Sunday at 10.30 pm, after an argument with Sehdulla, she poured kerosene on herself and set herself on fire,” added the officer.

Police were informed about the incident at 11.50 pm and rushed her to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.

She suffered 90 per cent burns and died on Monday, the officer said.

A case of abetment of suicide has been registered against Sehdulla at the Khajoori Khas Police Station.

He is absconding and the police have launched a search to nab him.

Police are ruling out the involvement of Shahzadi’s first husband, Rahish.
