Uttarakhand, Goa get new governors

President Pratibha Patil on Sunday announced new governors for Goa and Uttarakhand. Margaret Alva, in charge of Uttarakhand at present, will be the governor of Rajasthan.

A late evening statement issued from the president’s office said former Special Protection Group chief B V Wanchoo will be the new governor of Goa and former Madhya Pradesh minister and ex-MP Aziz Qureshi will take charge of Raj Bhawan in Uttarakhand. Besides, K Sankaranarayanan and E S L Narasimhan have been asked to continue as governors of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh respectively.

According to sources, names of former Railway minister C K Jaffar Sharief, former MP R K Dhawan and former Madhya Pradesh speaker Srinivas Tiwari are being considered for the governors’ post in other states.

At present, the post of governor is lying vacant in Kerala. Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil and Karnataka governor H R Bharadwaj are doubling in Rajasthan and Karnataka respectively.

The tenure of existing Governors in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Goa as well as that of Lt Governor of Delhi will end at the end of this month.The appointments came a day after the issue was discussed at the meeting of a Congress core group, comprising Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and party president Sonia Gandhi.
