A provider husband is always better than a sacrificing lover is the ‘message’ of ‘Prem Kahani’. Sheela performs like a dream – etching the ruthless determination of the rebellious daughter in the first half and the stoic wife and mother in the second; giving importance to only her character is bad. Ajai Rao is subdued, almost playing second fiddle to his leading lady.
The trend may soon turn dangerous. Ilayaraja infuses some spirit into a few song.Rangayana Raghu and Rajesh turn in pleasing, restrained performances. What could have been a powerful story turns into mush with its agonisingly slow pace. This Prem Kahani takes away all the audience ‘prem’ from it.
