For the first time in the Capital, refreshments will be given to victims of circumstances – children – at a family court while their parents are busy inside the courtroom fighting for justice.

A family court inaugurated at Patiala House complex by Delhi High Court’s acting Chief Justice A K Sikri on Tuesday has a small playground with a slide and an playroom full of kindergarten books, Barbie dolls, toys and a carom board.

“The court was made keeping in mind the needs of children. Families, when they come to court, should not feel that they came to an imposing place. They must experience a friendly atmosphere,” said Justice A K Sikri while inaugurating the court.

The court will ensure a congenial environment to deal with matters such as marriage, divorce, alimony and child custody. There will be three counsellors, who will try to resolve family disputes such as divorce, alimony and child custody.

A unique thing about this court is that it does not have a witness’ box. This will help maintain a family-friendly environment and where kids can feel comfortable.

On what kind of eatables would the court give to kids, Justice Hima Kohli told Deccan Herald, “Snacks, sweets and juice will be given.”

She said the walls of the family court premises have painting made by kids. The best painting, selected after competitions, were placed in counselling rooms.

Besides Justice Sikri, several judges of the high court and trial courts attended the inauguration ceremony. A play based on the theme ‘family’ was also staged.

The court, set up to tackle a heavy backlog of cases related to family matters and hearing them in an atmosphere different from the intimidating one of a regular court, will deal with cases in New Delhi district. It will be an addition to existing family courts in Dwarka, Rohini, Saket and Karkardooma.
