The animal kingdom came alive at the St Joseph’s pre-university Girls’ College on Tuesday.

A fish aquarium, tortoises engaged in a tete-a-tete, an owl about to fly, the peacock with its wings spread ready to dance, the tiny rat scurrying, a crocodile with its mouth wide open waiting for its prey.

All these animals were skilfully carved  from fruits, vegetables and leaves by the girls of St Joseph’s Pre-university College.

Fruits and vegetables of various shapes and sizes came in handy to fashion the various animals and birds.

The principal has given an indication a week ago and there were no classes on Monday. “The students brought fruits, vegetables and leaves to the college and shaped out the animals. They took three hours fro their creative output.

Three teams participated in the contest. Each team had their own theme. Prizes were given to the best vegetable carvings”, says Roopa, the principal of the College.

Owl from sapota, crocodile from bitter gourd, rat from potato, tortoise from dry coconut, fish in the aquarium using cauliflower and carrot were some of the creations.

The art of vegetable carving which began in Thailand, has now spread across the world and reached even places like Chikkaballapur. The products of vegetable carving are generally flowers or birds, fish and animals. However, the only limit is one’s imagination.

The techniques of vegetable carving vary from person to person, as does the final result. Some carvings present more artistic detail, while others have simple, yet beautiful shapes.

Vegetable carving is generally used as a garnish. It can also be used for flower arranging. The girls of St Joseph’s pre-university College made a splendid demonstration of this art.
