<p>Sarita Devi (60 kg) fought off a strong challenge from defending champion Gulsum Tatar of Turkey to eke out a 14-13 victory and enter the pre-quarterfinals of the World Women Boxing Championships in Qinhuangdao, China on Monday. <br /><br /></p>.<p>Former world champion RL Jenny (81kg) also registered a narrow 11-10 victory over Germany's Sarah Scheurich in the opening round but K Mandakini Chanu (57kg) lost 16-21 to World number one Tiara Brown in the second round. <br /><br />In a keenly fought bout, Sarita, who had to change her weight category to 60 kg to be eligible for Olympic qualification, locked the first round 3-3. <br /><br />The two went neck and neck in the second (4-4) and third round (3-3) but the Indian edged Tatar 4-3 in the decider to emerge victorious. She next plays Briton Natasha Jonas, who defeated Switzerland's Sandra Bruegger 23-11. <br /><br />In a see-saw contest, Jenny was off to a slow start closing the opening round trailing 1-2. She, however, came back strongly in the second to go up 4-3 and then 2-1 in the third. <br /><br />Scheurich put up a good fight in decider to level scores at 4-4 but the Indian was ahead in total points. <br /><br />However, it was not Olympic weight category bout as only three weight categories-- 51kg, 60kg and 75kg-- are available for women's boxing, which makes its debut in the mega event in London. <br /><br />Jenny next takes on Hungary's Timea Nagi. In 57 kg, Chanu ended the opening round 2-3 behind but came right back in the second, leading 4-3.<br /><br />The American, however, came back firing in the last two round to seal the contest and move to the next round.</p>
