CBSE students celebrate new 'grade'

Last Updated 21 May 2012, 19:26 IST

It is celebration time for CBSE schools in Bangalore, which have churned out many students with a CGPA (Cummulative Grade Point Average) of 10 in the Class X exams this year.

Teachers opine that the grade system introduced two years ago has played a crucial role in eliminating stress among students.

In this system, 60 per cent of the sum total marks are taken from the four Formative Assessments and one Submitive Test conducted in the school, while 40 per cent is taken from the other Submitive Test, which is the annual exam conducted by the CBSE Board.

This pattern of exam gives an idea of where the student stands even before appearing for the annual exam, which takes pressure off them.

Manila Carvalho, Principal of Delhi Public School, told Deccan Herald that the grade system makes the student study the entire year, from time to time, instead of cramming it all in the end.

“They know that the marks of each test will add to the score in the end. Hence, they take it seriously from the beginning. The grade system also has made way to reduce the number of students detained,” says Parvati Menon, Principal of NPS Koramangala.

Even children with learning disabilities have been able to improve their performance in the new system.

In DPS North, all the five special children in the class have secured grades between 6.5 and 7.5, says Manju Balachandran, the principal.

In BGS International School, 20 students secured 10 points, in Gear Innovative School eight out of 27 students secured CGPA 10, DPS South has secured 64 ten pointers out of 242 students while 157 are between nine and 10.

The Delhi Public School East has secured 100 per cent results too, with 21 students having achieved CGP 10 out of 94.

DPS North has 31 students with 10 point grade, out of 208.  NPS Koramangala has 30 of 87 students, and 68 of them have grades nine and above.
