Thousands of unemployed youth are running their own business, thanks to the efforts of Canara Bank Rural Development and Self Employment Training Institute (RUDSETI) at Honnenahalli in Kolar.

This institute has been providing training to the unemployed youth between 18 and 35 years and has made them self-sufficient. While training, the candidates are provided with training in various sectors besides  accommodation and food.

The Institute was established in 1992. It implements employment related training programmes initiated by the Centre and State governments. What makes it special is, training on its own unique programmes.

Training

The Institute imparts training in radio and TV repair, book binding, pumpset repair, cutting wood through machines, compound organic manure preparation, cellphone servicing, computer hardware, repairing household tools, photography and videography, building plumbing, welding and fabrication, bakery, tailoring, beauty parlour and artificial ornaments preparation, computer-office management and accounting, rearing honey bee, wiring  and many more. No course is repeated in a year.

This year, 1,654 youths have been trained for self employment including training programmes from the Centre and State. In addition, 21 two-day training programmes were conducted and 638 youths have been benefitted by this.

Last year, 3513 candidates were trained here and 1896 persons have started their own enterprises. These 72 per cent of the youth have been given 4.84 crore loan from the Institute. From the agriculture training unit, training has been imparted to 77 farmers and Rs 7.70 lakh loan has been given to them.

“Boosting job skills, training them to utilise locally available resources, guidance to start small industries is the main aim of the institute,” says Balasubramanyam, Director of the Institute, speaking to Deccan Herald.

Speaking further he said: “Youth who are trained here will be referred for loan from the institute. They will also be trained about personality development, communication skills and banking.”

Training on cell phone repairs will start on May 24.

Empowerment

Many have become financially self-sufficient after being trained in this Institute.

“I have started a beauty parlour at home, after getting a loan from Women and Child Welfare Department. The training in RUDSETI has helped me a lot and life is much happier now,” says Bhavya of Kanakanapalya.

“Without training from the RUDSET Institute, starting a own enterprise would still be a distant dream,” says Satish, who runs a mobile service centre in the city.
