ABVP stages stir against KEA move

Last Updated 30 May 2012, 17:29 IST

The members of Akhila Bharat Vidyarti Parishat (ABVP) staged a protest by forming a human chain at Basaweshwara Circle near KPT on Wednesday, opposing the Karnataka Examination Authority’s (KEA) decision to conduct the centralised system of admission process for the diploma courses from this academic year.

Addressing the protesters, ABVP State Secretary Ramesh said that the new decision of conducting counselling for diploma courses at the KEA office at Malleshwaram in Bangalore from this year would affect the candidates who mostly hail from poor families.

“Earlier the counselling for first year diploma courses were held systematically at the nodal centers of all the district headquarters. But with the Karnataka Examination Authority deciding to centralise the admission process, it would be difficult for the aspirants from rural areas to travel all the way to Bangalore for the counselling purpose. The travel and staying facilities would be an added burden on these students,” he said.

Hence, the ABVP has demanded the government to conduct the counselling process at the district headquarters like earlier. It has also demanded the authorities to withdraw the order given to the students to pay the counselling fee through demand draft at State Bank of Mysore branches and make provision for the students to pay the fee at the centers where applications are distributed.
