Baba Jai Gurudev, the spiritual leader with a large fan following in India and abroad, who died earlier this month at Mathura in Uttar Pradesh at the age of 116, has left behind a fortune said to be worth Rs 12,000 crore. It would now be controlled by his driver Pankaj Yadav.

The Baba, who had a preached simple life and taught his discples to wear jute clothes leaves behind thousands of acres of prime land, a fleet of luxury vehicles, including BMWs and Mercedes Benz cars and huge bank deposits. The assets are controlled by a trust of which Baba was the chief .

It will now be headed by Yadav.

As expected there was a tussle among baba’s followers over his heir. The name of Baba’s heir was announced on Wednesday on the ‘tehrween’ which is a ritual performed on the 13th day of one’s death, at his ashram in Mathura in the presence of a large number of his followers.

After the ritual, a disciple of the Baba produced a document porportedly written by Jai Gurudev and filed in a local court in UP’s Etawah district in 2010 in which he had declared Pankaj as his heir.

The announcement was made in the presence of a large police force as there was an apprehension that the camp opposing Pankaj might create trouble and resort to violence.

The other claimant to the throne of the Baba, Umakant Tewari and his supporters, however, raised slogans against the decision and left the venue in protest.

His supporters said they would not accept the decision and would take recourse to legal action indicating that the fight over the assets would only intensify in the days to come.
