Rahul asks party leaders to shun egos and and unite

Davangere, June 3, 2012, DHNS:

AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi has advised elected representatives and senior leaders of the party to sink their differences, desist from personal aggrandisement and work towards bringing the party back to power in the State.

He was addressing the party’s elected representatives in the urban local bodies, block and district unit presidents and other office-bearers of the party at the interaction programme organised here on Sunday.

The Congress’ rivals are not the BJP or the Deve Gowda-led JD(S). Internal differences, lack of co-ordination between senior and junior leaders, misinformation, misunderstanding among the party workers about their leaders and groupism are the party’s key enemies. In fact, these factors led to the defeat of the party candidates in the last Assembly elections, Gandhi said.

“As per my understanding, the Congress has a large voter base in the State. Senior leaders are not encouraging grassroots level workers. The party candidates were defeated in the Assembly polls in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, because of internal differences among leaders. Unity among all leaders from the grassroots to the high command is a must. They must work unitedly to bring the party back to power,” Gandhi said.

In all the three Assembly elections since 1999, the Congress’ vote share has been on a gradual rise, as per the statistics with the State Election Commission. Yet, the party failed to come to power.

”Without restricting themselves as senior and junior leaders, the Congress leaders must work for the success of the party candidates. If all are united, the party will return to power. If it remains divided, the party will sit in the opposition for another five years. All Congress leaders, elected representatives must introspect and unite to capture power in the next Assembly and Parliamentary elections,” he said.
