The breakdown of traffic signals due to water logging during monsoons could well be a thing of past as Delhi traffic police is installing solar panels at major traffic intersections to provide power back up to signal lights.

In the first phase, traffic police will install solar panels at six major crossings in the city.
“We conducted a trial by installing solar panels at four major traffic intersections. As the response at all the lights has been very encouraging, we have decided to install them at more intersections,” said Satyendra Garg, joint CP (traffic).

If the response in the first phase continues to be good, the initiative will be extended to all crossings, Garg added.

The four intersections where solar panels are already functional include Dwarka sector-21 Metro station, Red Fort, Shastri Park Pushta and Burari crossing. In the first phase, the solar panels will be installed at Mukarba Chowk, ITO, Rajouri Garden, IP flyover, Andrews Ganj and Karkari More.

Traffic police officials said disruption of power supply in monsoons is one of the major reason apart from mechanical failure for the breakdown of signals. It leads to chaos and increases problems of motorists during the rainy season.

“With the solar panels providing an additional power back up to the traffic lights, the issue of breakdown due to disruption in power supply will be taken care of,” Garg said.

There are 780 traffic signals and 390 blinkers across the national capital.

According to traffic experts, solar-powered panels can save a lot of money and they are environment-friendly as well.
