Aimed at promoting Indian art apart from giving a facelift to traffic junctions and roundabouts, New Delhi Municipal Council will soon be erecting three-dimensional public art exhibits in the Lutyen’s zone.

The civic agency has invited expression of interest from artists. They will also have the freedom to choose the location where they want to display their art form.

“Apart from roundabouts and traffic intersections, artists can also display their work at park corners, outside the gates of major public buildings and on walkways.

Two renowned artists have already submitted their proposals,” an New Delhi Municipal Council (NMDC) official said.

Artists are required to send their proposals, along with details of the locations selected, material to be used, estimated cost and the expected sponsors, added the official.

Officials also said the plan to erect art work has been planned in a way that it is in sync with the selected-location and its surroundings.

“The art work needs to be exciting and thought provoking. Something which is peaceful, yet,” the official said.

NDMC will not charge anything from the artists in lieu of providng space for displaying their art but they will not be allowed to advertise at the location.

“The artists can rope in sponsors for the work, but the sponsors will not be allowed to advertise at the site. At best an artist can give credit to the sponsor, which should be visible only from close quarters,” the official added.

However, the proposal of the civic body needs approval from Delhi Urban Arts Commission (DUAC).

“The last date for receiving all the proposals is June 26. All the entries will be sent to an empowered committee, which will include officials from other agencies and Delhi government,” the official said.

The committee will finally allot locations to artists and then the proposal will be sent for final clearance to DUAC, the official added.
