Last Updated 28 June 2012, 20:42 IST

To protest against power tariff hike, BJP will stage a dharna at 25 prominent places in Delhi on Friday demanding withdrawal of the increased tariff.

BJP pradesh president Vijender Gupta and leader of opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijay Kumar Malhotra will lead party workers to the Delhi electricity regulatory commission (DERC) office in Malviya Nagar.

“Chief minister Sheila Dikshit said now power tariff will be increased every third month. This is adding insult to injury. Her statement is inhuman and provoking agitated people and the BJP to strongly condemn it,” said Gupta.

Power companies are earning crores in profit, he added. “It can be confirmed by CAG audit but government is not ready to audit the companies because it will expose them,” said Gupta

The BJP will continue its fight against the city government’s anti-people policies, he added.

As per information, BJP’s national general secretary Vijay Goel will lead the demonstration at the office of power distribution company BSES on Shankar Road (Karol Bagh), while Vani Tripathi will take charge at Rani Bagh.

Mangeram Garg and Subhash Arya will head party workers to NDPL Office, Pitampura. Dr Harsh Vardhan and former mayor Kanwar Sain will lead the demonstration near Shakti Kiran Building, Shahdara Court.

Pradesh general secretary Ramesh Bidhuri will head the anti tariff hike agitation at BSES Office Pul Prahadladpur MB Road. General secretary Pravesh Verma and B B Tyagi will lead the workers to D C Chowk Sec-9, Rohini.

Yogender Chandoliya and B B Tyagi will be heading the demonstration at Sri Ram Chowk Mandawali while Pradesh vice president Radhe Shyam Sharma and Rajesh Gehlot will lead the dharna at Hari Nagar Ghantaghar BSES power Office.

NDMC power tariff hike

Responding to the reports that there has been no hike or negligible hike in power tariff in New Delhi Municipal Council area, Delhi government's power department on Thursday clarified that tariff hike will be applicable across the entire city including NDMC areas comprising Lutyens’ zone.

“A hike in power tariff has been effected for NDMC area also in a recent order issued by DERC. The tariff was revised in NDMC area in August, 2011 by 26 per cent, said a senior government official.

Fuel price adjustment (FPA) was effected in the fourth quarter of 2011-2012 by 7 per cent for distribution companies (discoms) against 11 per cent for NDMC,” added the official.

Power supply sources for NDMC and three discoms are different, he said.

NDMC and the three discoms have been operating on different parameters and the cost of power purchase is also quite different, which varies from Rs 2.32 to more than Rs 5 per unit, the official said.

“NDMC has just three major sources of power supply – BTPS (Badarpur), Pragati-I and Dadri-I – whose cost of energy ranges between Rs 2.32 to Rs 3.40. Whereas discoms buy power from 30 different generating units,”  he added.

Its average cost is Rs 5 and the cost is more in case of supply from stations like Jhajhar.
